Our History

Welcome to Prescott Roofing and Masonry, Inc., a distinguished family-owned business proudly serving the Carnegie community as well as the Greater Pittsburgh area for over 120 years. Our story began in 1906 when William Prescott established Prescott Roofing, shortly after immigrating to the United States from England. The original shop, located at 235 Noblestown Road in East Carnegie, was known as William Prescott Roofing and Sheet Metal.

William Prescott’s legacy was continued by his four sons- Charles, James, George, and William, who had contributed to the business from a young age. Following William’s passing in 1961, leadership transitioned to his son George, as Charles had passed away previously and James pursued a career with Duquesne Light. George and his brother William expanded the company by incorporating heating services, re-naming the company William Prescott and Sons. In 1974, after George and William retired, William’s son, Bill Jr., took over, continuing the tradition and renaming the business William Prescott Roofing and Heating.

Under Bill Jr’s leadership in the early 70’s, the company became incorporated and further diversified its’ services. He eventually sold the heating division, focusing on roofing and remodeling services, leading to a new name, William Prescott Roofing and Remodeling. Additionally, Bill Jr. ventured into new enterprises, opening The Sea Deli Restaurant in 1978, The Kindle Shop in 1984, and Chartiers Valley Self Storage in 1986.

Bill Jr. and his wife Barbara managed the company until their retirement to Florida in 1998, yet remained actively involved until Bill Jr.’s passing in 2005, after which Barbara took ownership.

Following the severe damage to the shop, trucks, and materials caused by the devastating flooding attributed to Hurricane Ivan in September, 2004, the company underwent a rebuilding phase. In 2006, Barbara’s son, Ted Schmider, became general manager to aid in this effort, and in 2007, her grandson, Chris Schmider, joined as operations manager, representing the fifth generation of family involvement. Barbara’s daughter, Diane Schmider-Valentino, joined as office manager in 2011, and ownership transitioned to Ted, Chris, and Diane. Since overcoming the challenges of the 2004 flood, our company has achieved significant growth and success, supported by a dedicated team with up to 40 years of roofing and masonry experience.
